Understanding Our Role in Conversation

How we carry ourselves in the world can create belonging

By Johanna Finch

Belonging is a feeling of comfort, of being a part of something that encourages you to participate and share in a mutual exchange of positive energy. Belonging means being seen, feeling heard, supported within a bigger community outside of yourself. It’s not necessarily being the same as anyone else, but feeling welcome in the space you are in.

It’s important for people to feel safe to express their thoughts and feelings and know they will not be attacked by doing so. I’d like to see less unhelpful comments or criticism's of people thoughts or feeling.

Model the behaviour you wish to see in others. Be open to hear different perspectives without feeling like you are losing your own voice.

Respect and value the other voices in the room without maliciousness, spitefulness or judgement. Cool the temperature and remind people of the mission of peace and understanding.

By understanding our role in conversation we can create a sense of calm, warmth, comfort, and cohesiveness.
