"We truly drive care into the community we live in”

By Jacqueline Nadeau
I am the Program and Communications Manager at Oakville Meals on Wheels. I took on this role 5-years-ago, as I live in Oakville and wanted to make a positive impact in the community in which I live. I have seen through other volunteering activities, that there are pockets in Oakville that need assistance. Being part of an organization that ensures those who need access to a hot, nutritious meal have that opportunity is meaningful and fulfilling.
The work we do directly impacts Oakville - we truly drive care into the community we live in. Our meals are delivered by a team of over 80 volunteers, and their dedicated and commitment is uplifting and inspiring.
We deliver more than just meals at Oakville Meals on Wheels. Our volunteers provide a friendly visit and informal wellness check, to ensure those we serve are continuing to thrive while living independently. This also provides families and caregivers peace of mind that their loved ones are doing well. We also provide clients with extras throughout the year -whether it be a gift bag during the holiday season, or informational items at various times throughout the year. Providing anything (items, services) that helps ease loneliness and isolation of clients, especially those living independently, is something we try to do as often as we can.
The organization continues to grow, since our establishment in 1976. Oakville Meals on Wheels is celebrating its 50th year of service in 2026, and there are lots of great things happening to raise awareness and celebrate this monumental milestone. 2026 is going to be a great year filled with campaigns and events that members of the general public can take part in.
With adequate funding and volunteers, the list is endless of what we can achieve. Steady funding adds stability to the program, as we receive no annual government funding. Inflation, and rising food prices, are real challenges that we face. Additional funds would mean minimal impact in terms of passing these increases down to the client, especially those who live on fixed incomes. Additional volunteers ensures delivery of meals and social interaction.
The community can help in various ways. If you have the time, we are always in need of volunteers. Donations are always welcomed and appreciated, and truly allow us to keep our wheels moving. Lastly, sharing information and raising awareness of what we do is very important. People can follow us on their social channels and share our content with their individual networks. More information can be found on our website at www.oakvillemealsonwheels.com.
