More Halton Residents Voted in 2026: A Positive Sign for Local Democracy

The results are in, and one trend stands out across Halton Region: more residents participated in the 2026 municipal election than in 2022. Turnout increased in Burlington, Oakville, Milton, and Halton Hills, showing renewed community interest in local community matters and the decisions that shape our communities every day.
Municipal governments have a direct impact on issues that matter most to residents, such as housing, transportation, parks, recreation, community services, infrastructure, and local planning. Increased participation suggests that more residents recognize the importance of having a voice in these decisions.
Voter Turnout by Municipality
Burlington
2022: 27.58%
2026: 35.52%
Oakville
2022: 28.3%
2026: 34.05%
Milton
2022: 28.99%
2026: 33.96%
Halton Hills
2022: 28.12%
2026: 31.38%
Across all four municipalities, voter turnout increased between 2022 and 2026. This is encouraging news for local democracy.
Democracy Doesn't End on Election Day
While elections are an important part of our democratic system, our engagement in democratic processes is critical between elections.
Being an engaged resident can take many forms. It can mean staying informed about local issues, connecting with neighbours, volunteering with grassroots and nonprofit organizations, attending council and town hall meetings, participating in public consultations, delegating before council, writing letters, or meeting directly with elected officials to share your perspectives and ideas.
Strong communities are built when residents actively participate in shaping the places where they live, work, learn, and play. Local decisions are stronger when they are informed by the voices and experiences of community members.
At Community Development Halton, we believe that a strong community is an engaged community. Whether you're interested in learning about local issues, getting involved in community initiatives, joining a volunteer opportunity, or advocating for change, there are many ways to make a difference.
