Finding Belonging and Purpose: My Journey with the Halton Multicultural Council

By Franklin Zhang

Feeling safe and embraced by a community is a profound experience, and belonging is at the heart of it. When I first arrived in Canada in mid-2024, I was a newcomer navigating unfamiliar terrain. Fortunately, I found a welcoming home with HMC, a community that embraced me with open arms.

Becoming an HMC Interpreter was a pivotal moment in my journey. It was more than just a role; it was an opportunity to bridge the gap between Mandarin and English-speaking communities, connecting Limited English Proficient (LEP) individuals with essential services. this role ignited a passion within me, motivating me to contribute meaningfully to the community. In this regard, I would like to thank many people in the HMC community for their great support, guidance, coaching and mentoring along the journey. My special thanks go to Interpretation & Translation Services Team, Employment Supporting Team, and the Settlement Supporting Team. Thank you to Pryanka, Hanadi Al-Masri, Zarah, Christine S. and Christine H. for all of their support along my journey.

Staying motivated and active within the HMC group requires personal initiative and strong commitment. However, it was the mutual communication between HMC and me that truly fostered our connection. We both shared a clear vision and initiative to remain engaged and supportive of one another.

Regular feedback, wishes, and key messages from HMC and other community groups have been invaluable in maintaining this connection. they serve as reminders of our shared purpose and the impact we can make together. It would be wonderful for HMC interpreter community to organizes regular gatherings, training sessions, or town hall meetings. These events would not only strengthen our bonds but also allow us to celebrate and recognize the countless hours of interpretation services provided to the community.

In essence, my journey with HMC has been one of growth, connection, and purpose. it is a testament to the power of community and the incredible things we can achieve when we come together with a shared mission.
