This Spring season saw two snap elections that have shifted seats across the country

As votes continued to be counted up until Tuesday, April 29th, Elections Canada announced that over 19.5 million Canadians cast a ballot, a voter turnout of about 68.65%.
Community Development Halton has been tracking the Federal Election and key issues like housing and homelessness, food insecurity, and support for the nonprofit sector. Recently, a collaborative Eat, Think, Vote event held at Open Doors in Burlington, brought together community members and federal election candidates to discuss the issue of food insecurity (read more here).
Despite continuous advocacy, food insecurity seems to be a lagging issue in the 45th Canadian election, trumped by the housing crisis, tariffs, and Trump, himself. This being said, the work to advocate for those most vulnerable in our society continues well past election day.
This past Monday, the Liberal party won the Federal Election and earned minority status in the House of Commons with 169 seats, making Mark Carney our next prime minister. For the Halton Region, the following MP's were elected in their respective ridings:
Oakville East - Anita Anand from the Liberal Party
Oakville West - Sima Acan from the Liberal Party
Burlington - Karina Gould from the Liberal Party
Burlington North-Milton West - Adam van Koeverden from the Liberal Party
Milton East-Halton Hills South - Parm Gill from the Conservative Party
Wellington-Halton Hills North - Michael Chong from the Conservative Party
Community Development Halton will continue to expand our advocacy efforts on key issues. Make sure to check back on our website often to stay up-to-date!
