Learning from Lived Experience: Raising the Voices of those in Halton Encampments

Why was it important for you to join this project as a Peer Researcher?

"To show others who are currently homeless what’s possible. It took me five years, but I made it."
"I had to compartmentalize my life. The longer you’re homeless, the harder it is to get out. I needed to decide what I would do for me, and push through it."
"Even though I now have somewhere to live, I want my experience to help make things easier for other people who are currently homeless."

Who we are
Community Development Halton is supported by a team of peer researchers who not only inform our understanding of the housing crisis from their lived experience with being unhoused, but also connect with the stories of others to drive change and cultivate community support. We do this work through story-sharing circles in community spaces across Halton Region. Our Peer Team provides mutual support, conducts encampment outreach, works with community partners to plan public events, and takes what we hear in community to inform decision makers and policy in Halton Region.
